Padmarajan

Posted by Kalyan Kumar

Dear friends,
It was some two weeks back that I chanced to watch NJAN GANDHARVAN in Asianet after a spell of 10 years. Not one to call it a master piece or a great movie, still it kindled the thoughts about the man who scripted and directed that cinema. late P. Padmarajan-the former AIR announcer and the prolific writer especially screen plays.
Who can forget Thakara and the unforgettable character of Chellapan Asari essayed by Nedumudi Venu? Though he fell into the trap of crass commercialism in later years, his powerful scripts and movies in the late seventies and eighties stood out from the predictable Malayalam pot boilers and painfully boring and indeligible art movies.
As a cine goer, I would select a handful of Padmarajan scripted movies as my favourites- Rathinirvedam, Vadakaiku Oru Hridayam, IthaEvide Vare, Thakara and Kallan Pavithran.
Like MT's Valluvanadan characters, the serenity of his nativeOnattukara region provides the backdrop for his rural characters. Can any of our club friends throw more light on Papan, as he isfondly called?.

Best Regards,
G. Kalyan Kumar

I still recall the times when Padmarjan's 'Prathimayum Rajakumariyum' appearing in Mathrubhumi weekly. In fact, I saw his movies later only. He belongs to that rare breed of film makers who had film making in their blood.
Let me add some more movies to Kalyanakumar's list. Kariyilakkattukal,Desadana pakshi Karayarilla, Oritathoru Fayalman, Thoovanathumpikal,.Moonampakkam,..
Padmarajan brought a new film sensibility in Malayalam cinema. He never hesitated to experiment. It seems he never believed in that commercial, art differentiation. That confidence must have given him the dare to take movies which are probably some of the best movies in Malayalam cinema.
He kept a romantic touch in almost all his films. Even when he slipped to commercial side we could feel that Padmarajan touch. He was very careful inchoosing the theme. A very good observation power coupled with magical senseof telling stories which others overlooked. That best exemplifies in hismovies like Kallan Pavithran and Oritathoru Fayalman. His death at an earlyage is a real lose to Malayalam cinema.
We lost some of our best film makers at a very young age. Aravindan,Bharathan, Padmarajan...
........And now we are regarded for Shakeela movies. India Today andDoordarshan have taken keen initiative to spread this all over India. WhenIndia Today says about Adoor, they use a phrase, 'Noted Malayalam film maker'. Is he not an Indian film maker? Pity of that weekly.
Thanks and regards
Gireesh----
